Rebuilding a life, restoring a classic car and the long, rough ride toward a dream long deferred.
DEMON ON WHEELS, an 80-minute docmetary film, is the story of an iconic American automobile and the kid who wanted to drive real fast.
Mike Ondish — daredevil, bootlegger and Ford master mechanic, hopped up his 1968 Mustang (863 horse at the rear wheel) feeding it an elixir of gasoline, naphthalene and home-brewed grain alcohol. He was chased by state police in two counties for racing through the sleepy Catskill Mountain hamlets at 170mph, tempting heaven and raising hell. Until one day, he put the car in hiding.
Now 35 years later, the demon has returned.
Mike vows to rebuild and restore his car and race her on a championship track. He will overcome incredible odds, sacrifice his life’s savings and his business, but will discover the generosity of neighbors and friends. He will test his mettle and pit his outlaw, back road skills and humble resources against professional drivers, and eventually, wil meet his hero, automotive legend and racing champion Carroll Shelby. Along the way, he inspires his entire community, giving everyone in town a sense of renewal, common purpose, pride and hopefulness. The story will be filmed on location amidst the mountains, valley and reservoirs surrounding Margaretville, and on race tracks and car club events across the country.
